What Cars Have Rotary Engines? A Look at the History and Models

News Article

The allure of the rotary engine, also known as the Wankel engine, lies in its smooth power delivery, compact size, and relatively simple design compared to traditional piston engines. This innovative engine, with its spinning rotor instead of reciprocating pistons, promised a revolution in automotive engineering. But the reality of its limitations, particularly regarding fuel efficiency and emissions, meant only a handful of production cars truly embraced the rotary engine. So, what cars have rotary engines, and why aren’t there more?

A Brief History of the Rotary Engine in Cars

The Wankel engine, named after its inventor Felix Wankel, first saw automotive application in the 1960s. Its unique operation – a triangular rotor spinning inside a specially shaped housing – offered several advantages. Compared to piston engines, rotary engines were lighter, smoother, and had fewer moving parts; This translated to higher rev limits and a distinct engine note that enthusiasts came to love.

Early Adopters: NSU and Mazda

Two manufacturers stand out as the pioneers of rotary engine technology in automobiles: NSU and Mazda. NSU, a German manufacturer, produced the Wankel Spider in 1964, the first production car with a rotary engine. However, NSU’s most well-known rotary vehicle was the Ro80, a technologically advanced (for its time) sedan that suffered from reliability issues, ultimately contributing to the company’s demise.

Mazda, on the other hand, embraced the rotary engine more fully and built a legacy around it. Their commitment to the Wankel extended for decades, producing a range of vehicles that showcased its potential. Their dedication to the engine, despite its challenges, cemented their place in automotive history.

Notable Rotary Engine Cars: A Look at the Models

Here’s a look at some of the most memorable cars that featured rotary engines:

  • NSU Wankel Spider (1964-1967): The world’s first production rotary-powered car.
  • NSU Ro80 (1967-1977): A technically advanced sedan plagued by reliability problems.
  • Mazda Cosmo Sport/110S (1967-1972): Mazda’s first rotary-powered car and a beautiful sports coupe.
  • Mazda R100 (1968-1973): A compact coupe and sedan.
  • Mazda RX-2 (1970-1974): A larger coupe and sedan.
  • Mazda RX-3 (1971-1978): A popular and stylish coupe and sedan.
  • Mazda RX-4 (1973-1978): A more luxurious and comfortable coupe and sedan.
  • Mazda RX-7 (1978-2002): Mazda’s iconic rotary sports car, spanning three generations.
  • Mazda RX-8 (2003-2012): The successor to the RX-7, featuring the Renesis rotary engine.

Why So Few Rotary Engine Cars?

Despite its advantages, the rotary engine faced several significant challenges that limited its widespread adoption. Fuel economy was generally poor compared to piston engines of similar power output. Oil consumption was also a concern, as the rotary engine inherently burns some oil as part of its lubrication process. Emissions were another hurdle, as rotary engines tended to produce higher levels of pollutants. These factors, combined with the complexity of manufacturing and maintaining rotary engines, ultimately led to their decline.

The Future of the Rotary Engine

While dedicated rotary-powered cars are currently absent from the market, the story of the rotary engine isn’t over. Mazda has continued to develop and refine rotary technology, and many hope for a future for this unique motor. The most recent development is that Mazda is utilizing the rotary engine as a range extender in their MX-30 electric vehicle. Whether it will ever return as the sole power source in a car remains to be seen, but the legacy of what cars have rotary engines is a testament to innovation and engineering creativity.
